Sixth Straight Win after a 2–0 Victory at Gladsaxe Stadium

It ended in a 2–0 win over FC Roskilde in the first home match of the spring season at Gladsaxe Stadium, watched by 991 spectators.

You could tell the pitch had been through a tough winter, and that’s why the last two home matches had to be played in Brøndby. A huge effort by the stadium staff made it possible to go ahead with the match. The pitch was very soft and had very little grass, so it quickly became uneven and bumpy. Naturally, that didn’t allow AB to play the fast, polished football we’ve seen in recent matches. The pitch conditions applied to both teams, but Roskilde handled it best.

It was a match where FC Roskilde had by far most of the play, but AB made the net ripple on two fantastic counter-attacks. The first goal came in the 9th minute from Casper Grening, and Tobias Hageltorn scored after 45 minutes. A scoreline that held until full time.

Change to AB’s starting XI since the last match
Compared with the most recent match against Ishøj IF, there was one change to the starting XI. Marco Vesterholm was out due to suspension and was replaced by Søren Ilsøe, who was back after serving his suspension.

The starting XI then looked like this
In goal: Adam Ingi Benediktsson; right-back: Tobias Damtoft; centre-backs: Marc Dal Hende and Adrien Koudelka; left-back: Travian Sousa; midfield: Alfred Horup and Søren Ilsøe. On the left wing: Jonathan Mathys, and on the right wing: O’Vonte Mullings. Up front: Tobias Hageltorn and Casper Grening.

Play and highlights
From the start of the match, AB were pushed back into their own half. After a short spell, Roskilde had a good effort from close range, but AB goalkeeper Adam Ingi Benediktsson got a hand to it. A few minutes later, Roskilde broke through the middle and a good finish went very close past the far post. After 9 minutes, AB countered, and Casper Grening eventually fired a powerful shot into the net to make it 1–0.
Throughout the match, Roskilde had many dangerous long throws into the box and created a number of chances, but AB’s defence managed to clear them.

20 minutes into the match, Roskilde won a corner, and the resulting header went well over the goal. Tobias Hageltorn battled for a loose ball and drove towards goal, with Casper Grening and Jonathan Mathys on either side. Tobias Hageltorn finished, but the shot ended up in the gloves of Roskilde goalkeeper Mikkel Juel Aagaard Sandersen.
With around 10 minutes left of the half, Roskilde had a shot straight in front of goal. It took a deflection and suddenly became a fairly big chance, but Adam Ingi Benediktsson quickly regained his footing, dived the other way and dealt with it.
Shortly before the referee’s half-time whistle, Tobias Hageltorn ran into the box, lost the ball, but got it back under control and calmly made it 2–0.

Roskilde took the initiative from the start of the second half. They combined well and had several good efforts, but Adam Ingi Benediktsson was a reliable last line of defence—among other things, he made a double save from close range. AB’s back line stood firm throughout and blocked several shots.
Milan Silva Rasmussen came on and took Casper Grening’s place up front after 59 minutes.
Jonathan Mathys dribbled through Roskilde’s defence and got a shot away, but Roskilde’s goalkeeper saved what was otherwise a good chance.
Mikkel Brund came on and took Alfred Horup’s place in midfield. At the same time, Tobias Hageltorn went off and was replaced up front by Tobias Lykkebak.

With just under 10 minutes left, AB had a corner that Milan Silva Rasmussen played short to Tobias Damtoft, who returned the ball to Milan Silva Rasmussen. He delivered a really good ball into the box, and Roskilde’s goalkeeper had to pull off a top-class save to push it over the bar.

In the final minutes, Emil Mygind came on and Jonathan Mathys took a seat on the bench.
The last chance of the match fell to Tobias Lykkebak when AB won the ball after a Roskilde corner. Tobias Lykkebak received it, ran towards goal and went one-on-one with the keeper, but his finish didn’t beat Roskilde’s goalkeeper.
AB’s players put in a huge fight, a big work rate and plenty of energy today against a strong FC Roskilde side. AB came out on top and claimed another win on a day when the football definitely didn’t click—that’s a strength too!

Captain Marc Dal Hende is happy the team battled their way to the win: “To be completely honest, I think Roskilde were better than us. Especially in the second half. I feel we struggled to apply pressure. What separates us from them is that we’re better in the box than they are.
I think we’ve got some strong players up front. I’m really disappointed with our second half. I love the heart we play with and the way we battle it home, but I think a lot was missing—especially in the second half. It’s going to be a long fight, and I love those wins too. Some things are missing, and we’ll go home and look at that.”
It was a difficult pitch, but Roskilde played well on it. They were good on the ball and gave us some dilemmas. We’re strong and solid. Big credit to the back four, to Adam, and to our number six—and then we’re just dangerous on the counter; we’ve really got quality there. A great win and a statement that’s good for the league and against a top team, so I think we’re taking steps again.

When I look at the match a bit more analytically, I would have liked more in the second half. We can also battle our way to a win now, and that’s a very important quality, and I love the win. I’m also critical and I want more, and we have to stay hungry and in no way think this should become a comfort blanket for us.

Head coach Fannar Berg Gunnólfsson praises the team for a huge effort: “It wasn’t the best football match if we’re talking big football performances. We fought, had the right spirit with us, and we did the work that was needed. We struggled a bit defensively in the first half, and we allowed them to have more control than we’d like.
In the second half we got a bit more control, but we still gave the ball away far too much. But those were three very important points.”

It was a huge work rate from the boys. When you don’t quite have your day, like we didn’t today, it’s good to have the right approach and believe we can still get it done. It’s difficult for every team to win matches, and every team needs points—but we’ve beaten them all.
The pitch wasn’t good today, and switching venues doesn’t make it any easier for us. But big praise to all the players—they did a fantastic job,” Fannar Berg Gunnólfsson concludes.
